Intervention: Nutrafol Women or placebo. Participants (n = 40; 26 active, 14 placebo) took 4 capsules once daily for 180 days; visits at baseline, day 90, and day 180 included standardized macrophotography/phototrichogram to measure terminal, vellus and total hair counts.
Study Duration: 180 days

In the Nutrafol Women group, significant improvements in mean terminal hair counts were identified. In the areas under investigation, terminal hairs increased from 141.7 (day 0) to 151.4 (day 90, P<0.01 vs. placebo) and 156.4 (day 180, P<0.01 vs. placebo).
Significant improvements in mean vellus hair counts and mean total hair counts were also identified. Vellus hair increased from 13.3 (day 0) to 14.6 (day 90, P<0.01) and 15.4 (day 180, P<0.01). This translates to increases of 10.1% (to day 90) and 15.7% (to day 180). Meanwhile, the placebo group exhibited reductions in vellus hair counts of -2.9% at day 90 and -2.2% at day 180. Total hair counts increased from 155.0 (day 0) to 166.0 (day 90, P<0.01) and 171.8 (day 180, P<0.01). This translates to increases of 7.1% (to day 90) and 10.8 (to day 180). Improvements in the placebo group were negligible (0.4% and 3% at day 90 and day 180, respectively).
Ratings for hair growth and hair quality via blinded global investigator assessment were progressively and significantly improved in the Nutrafol Women group, relative to placebo. At day 180, the mean hair growth improvement score was 1.08 in the Nutrafol Women group vs. 0.08 in the placebo group (P<0.05). The mean hair quality improvement score was 1.12 in the Nutrafol Women group vs. 0.08 in the placebo group (P<0.01).
These benefits were accompanied by self-reported improvements in hair after 180 days of treatment (P<0.05 for all relative to placebo):
- 80.8% of participants taking Nutrafol Women reported improvements in overall hair growth
- 73.1% of participants taking Nutrafol Women reported improvements in overall hair volume
- 80.8% of participants taking Nutrafol Women reported improvements in hair thickness
- 76.9% of participants taking Nutrafol Women reported improvements in the amount of noticeable new hair
No adverse events were reported during the 6-month study.
