Exploring the Connection Between Gut Health and Hair
In this review, the connection between gut health and hair growth is described.
This review highlights the emerging connection between gut health and hair growth, proposing that the gut microbiome plays a critical role in maintaining a healthy hair cycle. Gut dysbiosis—stemming from antibiotic overuse, poor diet, stress, and other lifestyle factors—can lead to increased intestinal permeability (“leaky gut”), inflammation, and nutrient malabsorption, all of which may disrupt hair follicle function. Beyond nutrient absorption, systemic inflammation and immune dysregulation originating in the gut can influence the hair follicle environment and growth cycle.
The review also explores the gut–brain axis, emphasizing how chronic stress affects gut microbial balance and, indirectly, hair health. Probiotic interventions featuring strains such as Lactobacillus reuteri and Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG are discussed as potential tools for supporting both gut and scalp health, pointing to a more integrative approach to managing hair wellness.
