New Insight into the Pathophysiology of Hair Loss Trigger a Paradigm Shift in the Treatment Approach

Access Supplement

This supplement describes a dysregulation of intrinsic signalling pathways within follicle physiology that spans the hair loss disorder spectrum – with a common inflammatory component identified in most hair loss pathogenesis (including  androgenic alopecia).

Published: Journal of Drugs in Dermatology

Summary:

In this supplement, the multifactorial factors that deregulate hair physiology are described. This includes:

  • Inflammation and oxidative stress
  • Androgen hormones
  • Environmental and genetic triggers
  • Psycho-emotional stress

It is argued that a paradigm shift in hair loss treatment is necessary, towards multi-targeting therapeutic approaches that address these diverse and complex factors.

The supplement also notes that multi-modal approaches for the treatment of hair loss- including platelet-rich plasma, low-level laser light and nutraceuticals – are emerging as viable treatment options for hair loss.

Conclusions

This supplement underscores that hair loss is driven by interconnected inflammatory, hormonal, environmental, and stress-related pathways, reinforcing the need for multi-targeted therapeutic strategies that address the full complexity of follicle dysregulation.
